Beaten and Bruised, Power Trip in Corpus Christi Dec 6 2018

Dallas’ Texas Power Trip recently made their way through the U.S. on support of The Black Dahlia Murder. I vaguely remember seeing them the first time when they opened for Anthrax & Lamb Of God. A couple of years have passed and they have quickly risen to the top as a must see old school thrash band with a hint of punk sharpness.  They have taken those old reigns and choked the hell out of them and forged something magnificent.

Playing in a smaller bar type venue means being up close, and as a photographer for the night that meant either camp up front to get some close up shots or stay in the back and have a blocked view by the sold out crowd. I chose to get up front right at the stage, which now reminiscing might not have been the smartest choice. You see, I was given advice to take a helmet, which at the time I thought was in jest. That was a big NOPE. Being so close meant being subjected to a beating of people moshing and slamming against each other, plus others getting on stage and stage diving, which resulted in getting knocked on the head a few times. Not only this, but a minute into the shoot, all my camera settings got messed up by being smashed up against the stage and unable to stay still for more than a second; thank goodness I had my backup gear.

The sheer force that is Power Trip is something to not take lightly. They have the skills, music and attitude to force down their brand of metal and suffocate you with it. This is what thrash metal is all about. Once their set was done, after having received some abrasions to both elbows and a bruised abdomen, I was able to get a breather and move a couple of feet. They say hide sight is 20/20 and having thought about what happened to me and if I would have made the same decision to be up front for the onslaught that would ensue, I would say HELL YES! Being part of that primal experience is something that doesn’t happen everyday. Is this the smartest choice, probably not, but then again shouldn’t we experience life to the fullest?

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals Return To Give You Your Metal Medication

September 7, 2018 Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals showed up in full destructive force at The Rock Box in San Antonio, TX. They are currently on tour, which is actually a rescheduled tour due to Philip having to take some time out for back surgery. I’m glad he has made a speedy recovery. Since I am from Texas, I grew up listening to Philip Anselmo with Pantera and consider them one of the greatest metal bands ever. Every project he has been in can easily stand on its own strength. Each are different and each one can kick your ass. This also applies to The Illegals. So, once I saw there was going to be a meet and greet for Philip H. Anselmo (& The Illegals), I had to make it. I know some people complain about meet and greets and their prices, but the price for this one was quite affordable and more than worth it.

Of course showing up to the venue wasn’t as easy for me this time around, having to drive two hours just to get to the venue, but it’s nothing that anyone else wouldn’t do to meet their metal icons. The meet and greet experience was pretty surreal; getting to actually talk to, shake hands, get a hug and take some photos was something I will always remember. Getting the chance to tell a member of one your favorite bands of all time of how much their music means to you is treasure in its own right. And having Philip be more than humble, grateful and thankful for what I had to say speaks volumes of the person he is. I have to say, every member of the band is completely down to earth and appreciative of the fans. Having had such a great experience, I know that I will more than happily pay for another meet and greet with these guys.

This was The Illegals second show on the tour which you would never know by how precise they were playing each song. Watching guitarist Mike De Leon appear to get possessed as he spun about; Stephen Taylor no BS attitude as he churned out the riffs, Joey “Blue” Gonzalez beat those drums to death and bassist Walter Howard lay down the grooves, all gave vocalist Philip Anselmo the perfect format to destroy your senses. Opening up with Little Fucking Heros grabbed you by the throat and didn’t let up. Rolling through with Choosing Mental Illness , Finger Me , Walk Through Exits Only to name a few, they gave the fans exactly the prescription they needed. Oh, by the way, if you haven’t picked up The Illegals latest album, you are missing out on some amazing music. It’s freaking great!!

Just when you thought the show was winding down, the last three songs of the night were Pantera songs! Kicking in with Hellbound , then to Death Rattle was fucking unbelievable! Finishing off with a mix up of Domination/Hollow gave the night a perfect close. You could feel the deafening roar of everyone losing themselves and singing in unison to beloved songs, myself included. This has got to be one of my top favorite shows in most recent memory; I just wish I could tag along for the rest of the tour.
