River City Rockfest didn’t happen this year, but thanks goodness Jinjer got booked to play at The Rock Box in San Antonio, TX. This was gonna be my third time seeing them play and I wish I could just follow them on every tour.
Taking the 2 hour drive is nothing compared to their trip to the US and trekking all over from show to show with little rest in between tours. This relentless work ethic has landed them a Headlining tour on this run with support from The Browning and Sumo Cyco.
Lucky for me, I won a meet and greet pass for this show. I highly recommend the meet & greet packages for any fan if you can afford it or get lucky to win a pass; I can’t think any more deserving band than Jinjer to spend your hard earned money on. Not only do you get to meet them and take a photo, you also get a VIP laminate, customized shirt and signed your poster. Plus, something that I found very refreshing, they took the time for each fan to talk to them; none of this “come, stand here, take and pic and get out” crap. Meeting them the year prior and watching them interact with the fans, you can easily gather that they truly appreciate their fans and it shows by the kindness and respect they give to everyone. It was a wonderful experience and something that I will do each and every time they tour in my area. While waiting in line for the show to start, you evidently end up making new friends. Talking to like-minded fans, you realize how big the metal community is and the loyal support that Jinjer amounted in the 10 years being a band. I enjoy listening to people talk about Jinjer, you can hear the excitement and awe in their voices and body language. You can tell they are having a hard time keeping in all the energy in that is ready to erupt once Jinjer takes the stage.
Once the venue doors opened up, fans rushed the merchandise table, so much so that the line went out almost to the door. Tonight’s show sold out, just like the majority of this tour and the trend continues on their next tour in Europe, shows keep selling out.
The air is alive with excitement and the venue packed as people clamor to the railing trying to get their best viewing angle. With the lights dimmed out, it’s finally show time!
Each member takes the stage with such calm demeanor, never revealing the magic about to happen as fans are screaming their lungs out. Then the notes of Teacher, Teacher start off the magnificent night as Tatiana takes center stage; somehow the fans shouting reaches a new level, almost a deafening roar. Finally all the pent up emotions pour over like Niagara Falls.
Next up was Sit Stay Roll Over, a brutal classic that kept the circle pit going followed by the first single off their last EP (Micro) Ape! And then Judgement (& Punishment) rolled the crowd over which also elicited a smile from Tatiana as everyone shouted in perfect time “BOOYAH”!
As Jinjer continued with their set, covering hit songs off the albums Cloud Factory, King of Everything, and Micro, one can’t help but be star struck with these amazing musicians (even tho they don’t like to be considered as such). We were also treated to another new song Retrospection, which continues to set the bar higher and higher. From the two new songs currently on rotation in their set, the new Macro album is going to be a trendsetter.
Watching Vlad play his drums is jaw dropping. As a previous drummer (during my teens lol) watching his style of playing and drum set up doesn’t make sense in the traditional ways. Yet the sounds that he produces is thunderous and jealousy producing.
As for Roman, watching him in his calmness is very deceitful compared to the riffs emanating from his custom OD guitar. His groove is thick and continuous, in which I pick up my custom air guitar and play along!
Then watching Eugene drop his deep bass notes on the ground on his custom Overload bass is mind boggling. By watching him play with his complex techniques, you would think that he was born with a bass in his hand, yet the truth is he has only been playing a little over a decade.
Now, the human siren, Tatiana. What can I say that hasn’t been already. Her clean vocals are mesmerizing and otherworldly, her growls are fear inducing and bone chilling. And with her trance inducing vocal powers, the listener will gladly follow that voice to the circle pit and crash to a bloody pulp in pure joy.
Each band member is perfect piece to the enigma that is Jinjer. There hasn’t been a band this exciting to come along in years. It’s no wonder that most of their shows have sold out months in advance. And here we are tonight, enjoying each note strung, hit, and sung to the fullest extent. Fully encapsulated through and through in perfect metal unison.
As the set continued, fans lost their voices from shouting, screaming and singing. Bodies became bruised and drenched in sweat from either jumping around, body surfing or the circle pit. But most notably was all the smiles and looks of happiness on each and every person watching Jinjer play throughout the night. We knew we were in the presence of greatness and that these humble, kind, and beautiful people are the future of metal.
Then came the last song, Pisces. The song that has 26 million views on YouTube, endless reaction videos and for some, the instant they fell in love and found their new favorite band. A wonderful song to end the perfect metal night.
On my way out the door towards the dark night, I saw fans again rushing the merchandise table to get their last tidbits to show their support. Leaving the venue, I felt fulfilled and euphoric, all thanks to the one and only Jinjer. I have memories that I will keep forever and share with anyone that will listen. Until next time my friends!
