Beaten and Bruised, Power Trip in Corpus Christi Dec 6 2018

Dallas’ Texas Power Trip recently made their way through the U.S. on support of The Black Dahlia Murder. I vaguely remember seeing them the first time when they opened for Anthrax & Lamb Of God. A couple of years have passed and they have quickly risen to the top as a must see old school thrash band with a hint of punk sharpness.  They have taken those old reigns and choked the hell out of them and forged something magnificent.

Playing in a smaller bar type venue means being up close, and as a photographer for the night that meant either camp up front to get some close up shots or stay in the back and have a blocked view by the sold out crowd. I chose to get up front right at the stage, which now reminiscing might not have been the smartest choice. You see, I was given advice to take a helmet, which at the time I thought was in jest. That was a big NOPE. Being so close meant being subjected to a beating of people moshing and slamming against each other, plus others getting on stage and stage diving, which resulted in getting knocked on the head a few times. Not only this, but a minute into the shoot, all my camera settings got messed up by being smashed up against the stage and unable to stay still for more than a second; thank goodness I had my backup gear.

The sheer force that is Power Trip is something to not take lightly. They have the skills, music and attitude to force down their brand of metal and suffocate you with it. This is what thrash metal is all about. Once their set was done, after having received some abrasions to both elbows and a bruised abdomen, I was able to get a breather and move a couple of feet. They say hide sight is 20/20 and having thought about what happened to me and if I would have made the same decision to be up front for the onslaught that would ensue, I would say HELL YES! Being part of that primal experience is something that doesn’t happen everyday. Is this the smartest choice, probably not, but then again shouldn’t we experience life to the fullest?
